It’s Zippy Tip Tuesday!
If you’ve ever tried to crack into a butternut squash, you know that it can seem like quite a daunting task.
The outer shell is extremely rock-like. And its odd, roly poly, irregular shape is not what you’d call user-friendly on a cutting board. So one has to ask oneself, what powerful tool should be used to obtain access to that smooth sweet nutty interior?
Crowbar? Sledgehammer? TNT?
Believe it or not, there are a couple of common kitchen staples that can take you from woefully bashing to gleefully gliding your way through this very popular squash. It’s true!

I love butternut squash soup with chipotle cream. Visiting from Lovely Ladies.
This is the best! SO I saw your photos with apples over your head and then the hammer and squash. I just asked a friend how in the heck do I work with a butternut squash without injuring myself or my counter! This video is great! I would LOVE to share this on my site. Would you consider being a “guest feature?” I’m so glad I clicked your link! Love it Sherry!!! laura@imnotatrophywife.com
I often wished for a samurai sword to go all John Belushi on those squash. But maybe you’ve got a better idea here.
Your pictures always crack me up 🙂 thanks for sharing.

Thank you!! I make my kids a carrot/squash/apple puree often and I pretty much dread the part where I have to slice the squash. This is going to make the process so much easier. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great tip, I love cooking with butternut so this is very helpful as I usually end up using a peeler (not fun) as I am always trying to save as much as the flesh as possible…regardless of the fact that they tend to be more than big enough for my purposes.
Will be trying this tip the next time I cook butternut squash.
Awesome! I just bought one last night, thanks!!
Thank you! I’m sorry you learned about poking holes in it the hard way!
Great tutorial! Found you through Miz Helen’s blog hop today. Love that photo of you and the hammer! lol
Definitely needed this tutorial! I have a butternut squash on my counter top! Thanks for linking to Less Laundry, More Linking
Hi, new follower thru Katherine’s Corner – just had to check this out, and thanks so much for the tip! My SIL makes a wonderful butternut squash pie, but I never tried it because of the trouble of the peel.
You are just too cute. I have seen your picture on other blog parties and it makes me laugh when I see it. In a good way. Thanks for the video and will try this for sure…………Andi
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
YOU HADE ME AT SLEDGHAMMER!!! Thanks!
I’m still smiling as I just watched your lovely video. What a fabulous idea. I have avoided peeling the squash like this because of that darned tough skin. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this great idea. Your smile and enthusiasm keep me smiling…keep up the good work! Thanks so much for sharing at Weekend Potluck.
Actually, it is YOUR kind comments that keep me smiling–thanks so much!
brilliant! I don’t make a lot of butternut squash, but I am a huge fan of spaghetti squash. Peeling is not an issue but I do have to wait for my husband to get home to cut it in half. Any tips on cutting it in half? Should I try this? Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop Hugs!
Yes, I make a lot of spaghetti squash and it works perfectly with that as well. Thanks Katie!
Great Video! Hope you are having a great weekend and thank you so much for sharing your awesome post with Full Plate Thursday.
Come Back Soon!

I’ve seen your funny pictures on linky pages, but I hadn’t stopped by yet to watch one of your cute videos yet. What fun. Thanks for sharing this great tip on the Ladies Only Blog Share!
This is the first time I have stopped by, but have seen your link-ups at a few parties. I just HAD to watch you butternut squash video. I always buy pre-cut squash because I hate cutting and peeling this. This is a great resource! I might be able to buy a whole (& cheaper) squash now!
Glad to be able to help Scarlett. Thanks for stopping by!
Visiting from Wonderful Food Wednesday. Great video! I hate peeling squash. I will definitely be using your method in the future. Thanks for linking up. 🙂
Best Wishes,
Crystal
Butternut squash is one of my favorites and I’m always struggling when peeling it. I am going to try this method, next time I get a squash! Thanks for sharing at Simple Supper Tuesday.
Amazing!! I love butternut squash, but I avoid it because I have a bad arm and they are too hard to handle. This video has just made my day! Thanks!
You made my day with your lovely comment–thanks Amanda!
Why have I never thought to heat it first? So simple. I’m always there hacking away, even with sharp knives!
The photo of you with the Sledgehammer just made me laugh out loud.
Great idea! I do the same “microwave method” with those doggone hard spaghetti squash, too!
I do too Carol, makes it a cinch!
Haha your picture is so funny. This is great. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this, much needed!
For 48 years I’ve been cutting my squash the same way – only raw! Last year we cut, cooked, mashed and froze 30 one quart bags. (care to tell me where you were then?) From now on I’m doing it your way! f
Learning something new every day…….

Well, if it’s any consolation Chris, it took me 2 years longer than you. But I guess better late than never! Thanks so much for stopping by.
This looks like a quick and easy way to peel them. We have a garden full of butternut so I am sure this will come in handy! Dropping by from Anyonita’s Nibbles.
Thank you so much for the tip. I love your personality too! Definitely have to watch you more just to enjoy your company. 🙂 (Don’t take that the wrong way… I’m just trying to say I enjoyed this post and video.)
Thanks so much for your very kind comment Crystal. Have a great week!
The photo drew me right in! I buy my butternut squashed all peeled for this very reason – I could never figure out how to do it easily. Loved this post. I visited from Wordless Wed. Have a great day!
Featured and pinned!! Thanks for always sharing at What to do Weekends. Linda
Great tip! Thanks for sharing at the Twirl & Take a Bow Party! Have a great week!
That is brilliant! We eat a lot of butternut squash around here. Thanks for the tip!
I just peel mine with a vegetable peeler. Pretty simple. You can cut it up into smaller bits by slicing first.
