Zippy Tips

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

It’s Zippy Tip Tuesday!

I always used to think that I hated Brussels Sprouts.  The only kind I was ever exposed to as a kid came frozen in a box.  Mom used to boil them until they reached the texture of watery mush balls.  Seriously, if you had no teeth, you could easily gum them without any trouble.

Well flash forward 40 years to my little garden over on East Detroit Avenue.  I was given some leftover plants from the greenhouse at the school where my S.O. worked.  Some were marked “broccoli”, but in time, it became obvious by the little nubbies on the stalk that they weren’t broccoli; they were brussels sprouts!  “Dang, I hate brussels sprouts”, I said. “What on earth am I going to do with them?”

Pretty soon the little nubbies grew larger and it was time to do SOMETHING with them, so I roasted them.   I could not believe the difference in taste between the sprouts of my childhood and the fresh ones right off the stalk.   I could just eat them straight from the pan when they come out of the oven!

Below is a short video showing how I roast my sprouts.  I usually stir them a few times during the roasting process.

Think you hate brussels sprouts?  Try them this way:

Mom always said it is nice to share!
